FOODS FOR NORMAL NUTRITION: DIETARY GOALS AND GUIDELINES
Dietary goals
1. To maintain a state of positive health.
2. To ensure adequate nutrition for all age groups, (i) Pregnant and lactating women, (ii) infants, (iii) children, (iv) adolescents and (v) elderly.
3. To achieve adequacy in all nutrients and prevent deficiency diseases.
4. To prevent chronic degenerative diseases.
Dietary guidelines
(i) Use a variety of foods for adequate nutrition to acquire all the essential nutritional components.
(ii) Take care of extra needs of pregnant and lactating women.
(iii) All infants to be exclusively breast fed for 4-5 months, and henceforth to be continued for one year.
(iv) Weaning foods and food supplements to be introduced at 5 months.
(v) All growing children and adolescents should be given adequate diet for growth and development.
(vi) Use of vegetables and fruits should be plenty unless otherwise restricted due to illness.
(vii) Saturated fats and the trans fatty acids should be avoided and use of polyunsaturated fatty acids and mono-unsaturated fatty acids should be encouraged.
(viii) Salt to be used in moderation.
(ix) Water should be taken in adequate amounts unless otherwise indicated due to the onset of illness.
(x) Sugar to be used sparingly.
(xi) Fibre should be adequate and refined foods to be used in moderation unless otherwise indicated.
(xii) All foods consumed should be clean and safe.
(xiii) Proper physical activity should be maintained unless otherwise indicated.
