POST-OPERATIVE DIETS
Clear liquid diet
Full liquid diet
Soft, semi-solid diet.
Clear liquid diet
This diet provides some sugar, salt and flavour and should be used for a limited period of time.
Foods to be used:
1. Clear soup
2. Strained fruit juice, coconut water
3. Flavoured gelatin or jelly
4. Black tea/coffee
5. Sugar, salt
6. Ice.
Do not use any other food.
Full liquid diet
This diet provides inadequate calories. It is a transition between clear liquid and a soft diet.
Cereals: gruels with refined cereals (thin consistency).
Milk and milk products: Buttermilk, plain curd, cream, clear milk shake, ice cream (plain)
Meat and meat products: Soup or cream soup, egg with milk (eggnog)
Legumes: Soup
Vegetables: Vegetable soup
Fruits: Fruit juice
Beverages: Tea/coffee, carbonated beverages.
Do not use any solid foods.
Soft, semi-solid diet
This diet provides easily digested foods with no raw fibrous material. Has adequate nutrition. Use regular normal diet menu with following changes:
Breakfast: Light tea or coffee with sugar
Milk 200 ml (1 glass)
Cereal or bread or
Soft-boiled egg or cheese, butter
Jam, marmalade
Lunch: Soup
White bread or bread roll
Soft-cooked vegetables/mashed potatoes
Curd
Cooked, stewed fruit or juice
Tea: Light tea or coffee, biscuits 2-3
Dinner: Same as lunch
Bedtime: Milk 1 cup
Avoid rich gravies, spices, sauces, pickles, fried foods like rich cakes, pastries, dry fruits and nuts.
