HEALTHY EATING FOR OBESE CHILDREN
Latest scientific studies have shown obese mothers will have double the risk of having obese children, by 4 years of age, and obese children will make obese adults.
It is established that obesity is difficult to treat in children, it is best to prevent it. Studies have shown that video games, television and computer games are the major risk factors for getting children overweight and obese.
1. Serve only healthy food to children, they should be encouraged to eat vegetables, fruits, whole grains, whole dais, milk, etc.
2. School snack should be also healthy, e.g. whole wheat bread, sandwich, vegetables, fruits, etc.
3. Encourage physical activity by family involvement; use of parks, swimming, cycling.
4. Reduce TV watching and computer games.
5. Let children help planning a family menu.
6. Encourage healthy meals.
The obese children should be encouraged to avoid junk foods that are rich in fat, starch and salt. The calories recommended are the normal recommendations for children according to age as they need normal calories for normal growth. Within this calorie range healthy foods rich in proteins, vitamins and minerals should be encouraged. Regular use of fatty and sugary foods like ice creams, chips, chocolate, aerated drinks, fried foods, burgers and pizza should be discouraged.
To conclude children should be taught proper selection of healthy foods, from within the family meals, as children will follow the adult eating pattern eventually.
