COMMON VITAMINS: PABA (PARA-AMINO-BENZOIC ACID)

Functions
A growth promoting factor. Stimulates metabolism and all vital life processes, possibly in conjunction with folic acid. Prevents skin changes due to aging. Prevents graying of the hair. Has been used, in combination with pantothenic acid, choline and folic acid, in treatment of gray hair, with some success. Essential for healthy skin. Soothes the pain of burns and sunburns. When added to a salve and applied to the skin, may protect against sunburn, and even prevent skin cancer. Helpful in a variety of skin disorders, including eczemas and lupus erythematosus.
Deficiency symptoms
Deficiency may cause extreme fatigue, eczema, anemia, gray hair, reproductive disorders, infertility, vitiligo and loss of libido.
Natural sources
Brewer\'s yeast, whole grain products, milk, eggs, yogurt, wheat germ, molasses and liver. PABA is also synthesized by friendly bacteria in the healthy intestines.
MDR (minimum daily requirement):
Potencies of PABA higher than 30 milligrams per tablet are available only by prescription. Much higher potencies are used therapeutically, up to several hundred milligrams.
Note: According to some researchers, continuous ingestion of high doses of PABA is not recommended, as it can be toxic to the heart, kidneys and liver.
