HOW TO SURVIVE YOUR DOCTOR: TONSILLECTOMY, TOXIC SHOCK SYNDROME
Tonsillectomy
Tonsilar arteries severed by the questing curette of single minded surgeons can suffocate either adults or children with gouts of spurting gore. This complication alone - immediately or days after operation - is the main reason why most thoughtful doctors avoid routine tonsillectomy. The removal of tonsils is indicated when a person\'s airway is physically obstructed by very large tonsils, with the appearance of a tonsillar abscess, or when attacks of tonsillitis occur every two to four weeks. The non brutalizing approach to tonsillitis involves the prescription of a seven day course of penicillin. Recurrent tonsillitis is an indication for a three month trial of low dose penicillin. Surgery is then contemplated if \"conservative\" management fails.
Toxic Shock Syndrome
Massive sudden life threatening sepsis caused by the aggressive invasion of a bacterial infection is known as the Toxic Shock Syndrome. The condition gained world wide attention when it was shown to occur in response to an infection arising from tampons. Too long inserted and the store of biological material encapsulated within a tampon becomes a superb culture media, from which bacteria can spread and rapidly overwhelm the bodies defense systems. Toxic Shock can also complicate the tail end of a Septicemia and it heralds the close proximity of death.
Home Remedies
Never forget about an inserted tampon. The forgotten tampon is a bacteriological time bomb waiting to go off. Change a tampon every four hours. If possible use sanitary napkins instead.
