HEALTH CARE PRODUCTS: COMPLEMENTARY AND ALTERNATIVE MEDICINE (CAM)
Consumers of health care products and services today face an amazing array of choices when they consider taking action to improve their health. One of the newest movements toward self-care and health promotion focuses on the use of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM). In fact, it is difficult to turn on the television, read a magazine, or walk through a store without some new-fangled product or device touting itself as a miraculous and healthful way of restoring vim and vigor to life. Though such declarations would have been considered outright quackery by your parents, or would have been laughed at by previous generations as being too \"far out\" for serious consideration, today, people are listening. As ordinary people search for more control of their health care, less risky or invasive solutions to health problems, and lower-cost, more natural forms of healing, they are focusing increased attention on foods, products, and services that offer help without harm and a range of choices.
As claims of the benefits of CAM mount, tales of harm have also surged. As more people flock to CAM as the primary source of prevention and treatment, a largely unregulated cottage industry is showing exponential growth.
