COMPLEMENTARY MEDICINES: GLUCOSAMINE, CHROMIUM PICOLINATE AND ANTIOXIDANTS
Glucosamine
Glucosamine is a substance manufactured by the body that plays a key role in the growth and development of cartilage. When present in sufficient amounts, it stimulates the manufacture of substances necessary for proper joint function and joint repair. It is manufactured commercially and is sold under the variety of different names, with glucosamine sulfate being the preferred product. To date, glucosamine has been shown to be effective in the treatment of osteoarthritis and related degenerative joint diseases and appears to relieve swelling and decrease pain. Unlike many other supplements that are available, glucosamine sulfate has an excellent safety record with few noteworthy side effects.
Chromium Picolinate
A few years ago, chromium picolinate was believed to be the new miracle for anyone interested in weight loss. Since then, at least two major studies at the U.S. Department of Agriculture Human Nutrition Research Center have shown no benefit.
Antioxidants
It should be noted that antioxidants are among the most sought-after forms of supplements on the market. Primary antioxidants include beta-carotene, selenium, vitamin C, and vitamin E.
